With this month of May 2023 arrive the municipal and regional elections, which will be held on Sunday the 28th. Citizens are called to the polls to elect their local and regional representatives in elections in which some, in addition, must be part of the polling stations.

Each polling station is made up of a president and two members. These charges are mandatory and are decided by public lottery.

The citizens selected for this must appear at the polling station on election day, since if they do not do so, “they will incur a prison sentence of three months to one year or a fine of six to twenty-four months.”

Only those who previously justify their absence with one of the reasons included in the Organic Law of the General Electoral Regime (LOREG) may avoid the polling station.

Voting by mail does not exempt citizens from being called to form part of a polling station, despite the widespread belief that it does.

Those citizens called to form part of a polling station who meet any of the above reasons, have a period of 7 days to present their allegations before the Zone Electoral Board.

Subsequently, the Electoral Board must resolve the claims within a period of five days.
