Chelsea legend, Claude Makelele, recently made headlines for resigning from his managerial position at Greek side Asteras Tripolis after just three matches. Makelele, who had a promising start with a victory and two draws, cited interference from club management as the reason for his abrupt departure.
In an interview with LondonWorld, Makelele expressed his frustration at the club’s management for not allowing him full control over team selection, which was initially promised to him. He recounted a specific incident where he was pressured to bench a key player, Darnell Eric Bile, despite his impressive performance during a match against Athens Kallithea. Makelele’s decision to bring Bile on in the final minutes resulted in two assists and a win, highlighting the player’s importance to the team.
This incident, along with other instances of interference, led Makelele to terminate his one-year deal with Asteras Tripolis. Despite his successful playing career, which included 15 trophies with top clubs like Chelsea and Real Madrid, Makelele has struggled to replicate that success as a manager.
Prior to his stint at Asteras Tripolis, Makelele had managed clubs like Bastis and Eupen without significant achievements. He also had a five-year break from management before taking on the role at the Greek side. Additionally, Makelele has experience working as a youth coach and technical mentor at Chelsea, showcasing his dedication to the sport beyond his playing days.
Following his resignation, reports suggest that multiple clubs have already expressed interest in working with Makelele. While his tenure at Asteras Tripolis may have been short-lived, Makelele’s passion for coaching and his wealth of experience as a former player continue to make him an attractive candidate for future managerial roles.
