A district court in Sweden has ruled in favor of a Swedish labor union in a dispute with Tesla. The court stated that it cannot force Swedish postal workers at PostNord to resume deliveries to Tesla, highlighting the rights of parties in the labor market to take action without state intervention.
The lawsuit arose when PostNord workers stopped deliveries to Tesla facilities in support of mechanics at Tesla service centers and dealerships who went on strike in October 2023. The Tesla mechanics were seeking a collective agreement with IF Metall, which covers over 90% of the country’s mechanics, but Tesla had not engaged in talks with the union since the strike began.
Despite finding alternative solutions to other labor disruptions in Sweden, such as shipping vehicles by truck instead of through ports following a port worker refusal to unload Tesla vehicles, Tesla has struggled to address the postal disruptions. PostNord workers have halted all postal services to Tesla facilities, including the delivery of new license plates for Tesla vehicles.
Following the court ruling, the head of Seko, representing the postal workers, called on Tesla to respect the Swedish collective agreement model and cease efforts to circumvent labor regulations. The union emphasized that Tesla’s avoidance of the established rules indicates underlying issues within the company.
