The World Aquatics High Diving World Cup and Junior Championships that were scheduled to take place in Brasilia on October 11-13 have been cancelled due to safety concerns stemming from inclement weather. The first day of competition for the High Diving Junior Championship saw young athletes competing on the 12m and 15m towers, with Lacey Hema of Australia emerging as the first junior world champion in high diving.
Unfortunately, after a thunderstorm and heavy winds hit the competition venue on Friday evening, the decision was made to cancel the remaining events. World Aquatics Executive Director Brent Nowicki expressed his disappointment but emphasized that the safety of the athletes is the top priority.
The cancellation of the High Diving World Cup event in Brasilia also means that athletes will have to wait for an updated qualification pathway for the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore 2025. This decision was made in consultation with the Brazilian Diving Federation to ensure that the necessary safety standards could not be met within the limited time available for preparations.
While it is always disappointing to cancel such events, especially considering the dedication and hard work of the athletes, safety must come first. World Aquatics is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all participants, and the decision to cancel was made with their best interests in mind. Stay tuned for further updates on the qualification pathway for the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore 2025.
