Iraq’s Mass Group Holding (MGH) and GE Vernova have made significant progress on the modernisation of the Besmaya Power Plant in Baghdad, which is Iraq’s largest power facility with a capacity of 4.5 gigawatts (GW). According to a press statement from GE Vernova, Phase 1 Advanced Gas Path (AGP) upgrades have been completed on four 9F.04 gas turbines, and Phase 2 upgrades have commenced on an additional four 9F.04 gas turbines.
The two companies have also entered into an eight-year services agreement to support Phase 3 of the plant, which is equipped with four GE Vernova 9F gas turbines. This agreement, secured in the second quarter of 2024, follows previous operations and maintenance (O&M) and long-term service agreements for Phases 1 and 2.
GE Vernova has stated that the Phase 1 AGP upgrades are expected to improve efficiency, availability, and power output by up to six percent. Additionally, Phase 2 upgrades are on track to be completed by the first quarter of 2025.
In addition to the progress at the Besmaya Power Plant, GE Vernova has contributed significantly to Iraq’s energy sector. The company has added up to 19 GW of capacity to Iraq’s grid, built 30 substations, and completed the initial phase of the country’s grid connection with Jordan. Furthermore, GE Vernova has facilitated over $3 billion in financing for energy projects in Iraq.
This collaboration between MGH and GE Vernova highlights the commitment to enhancing Iraq’s power infrastructure and ensuring a reliable electricity supply for the country’s residents. The modernisation efforts at the Besmaya Power Plant are crucial in meeting the growing energy demands of Iraq and improving the overall efficiency of the power generation facilities.
