Liquid SA, in partnership with the Western Cape government, is working on expanding public broadband access in the province. The project involves an investment of over R2bn over the next seven years to provide free public Wi-Fi hotspots. This initiative aims to bridge the digital divide and increase internet access for citizens in the Western Cape.

Deon Geyser, CEO of Liquid Intelligent Technologies SA, highlights the company’s commitment to connecting all South Africans. He mentions that Liquid SA has already established 1,600 free public Wi-Fi hotspots in the province, benefiting nearly 4 million citizens. The Wi-Fi network offers 6GB of data per device per month at speeds of up to 20 Mbps.

The partnership with the Western Cape government focuses on providing broadband infrastructure, such as fibre, which enables internet service providers to offer connectivity to the public. Geyser explains that this model is similar to a project in the Eastern Cape, where Liquid is also involved in expanding broadband access.

The Western Cape already boasts the highest internet access rate in the country at 88.1%, according to Stats SA’s 2023 general household survey. However, Liquid aims to further increase this rate through their collaboration with the provincial government. Geyser emphasizes the importance of public-private partnerships in driving such initiatives and reducing the digital divide.

By investing in broadband infrastructure and establishing free public Wi-Fi hotspots, Liquid SA is contributing to the socio-economic development of the Western Cape. The project not only enhances internet connectivity for residents but also benefits schools, hospitals, clinics, and libraries in the region.

Overall, the partnership between Liquid SA and the Western Cape government is a significant step towards creating a more digitally inclusive society. By expanding public broadband access and promoting connectivity, the initiative is paving the way for a more connected and empowered community in the province.
