Two cayucos in which 178 immigrants were traveling arrived today, Sunday, at the islands of El Hierro and Gran Canaria, according to sources from Maritime Rescue, the Emergency and Security Coordinating Center (Cecoes) 1-1-2 and the Red Cross.
One of the cayucos arrived at the island of El Hierro with 99 people on board, all of them of sub-Saharan origin, proceeding to transfer a pregnant woman and a man to the Hospital Nuestra Señora de los Reyes for assistance.
The location and rescue operation began minutes after 01:00, when the Civil Guard informed the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Tenerife of a canoe sailing 10 miles south of La Restinga.
The Rescue Coordination Center immediately mobilized the Adhara rescuer, which sighted the canoe half an hour later and proceeded to escort it to the port of La Restinga, in the municipality of El Pinar, where the disembarkation was completed around 2:50 a.m.
There were 79 men, 7 women and 13 minors in the canoe, including 2 babies and 1 child. The healthcare system evaluated all of them and proceeded to transfer a pregnant woman and a man to the Hospital for assistance, due to different pathologies.
On the other hand, minutes before 7:00 a.m. the Civil Guard contacted the Maritime Rescue Center in Las Palmas and reported a radar echo, a possible boat or cayuco, sailing 8 miles south of Arguineguín (Gran Canaria).
Once the Macondo rescue boat was mobilized, it sighted the canoe at around 07:30 hours and escorted it to the port entrance, beginning the disembarkation at around 08:20 hours. There were 79 sub-Saharan people on the boat and no transfers were made to health centers.
