The city of Madrid includes two local holidays in its 2023 work calendar. One of them was the day of San Isidro, while the second will take place this Thursday, November 9, with the celebration of Almudena Day, patron saint of the capital.
As it is a local holiday, only city workers will have a holiday, those whose companies follow the city’s work calendar despite not being located in the capital.
It is possible that due to this holiday there are supermarkets that vary their hours, while others will remain closed. Below, we offer you information from some of the main food chains, such as: Mercadona, Carrefour, Lidl, Aldi, Alcampo, Ahorramás, Hipercor and DIA.
The Mercadona supermarket chain is known for its strict schedule policy, opening continuously from 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. from Monday to Saturday and closing on Sundays and holidays. Almudena Day, which falls on Thursday, will be no exception and all its stores will remain closed and will not open until Friday, November 10.
Carrefour and its various variants: Carrefour Market, Carrefour Express or Carrefour Bio, have different opening hours and days. The majority of establishments that are authorized to open on Sundays and holidays will open their doors on Thursday, November 9, although some businesses will do so during reduced hours in the capital. The usual opening hours of Aldi stores are from 9:00 a.m. or 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. from Monday to Sunday, including holidays that fall during the week, such as Almudena Day. However, it is recommended to check the hours of each establishment through the Aldi store locator.

Hipercor stores mostly have hours from Monday to Sunday from 9:00 a.m. or 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. However, on Almudena Day, some establishments will even open during their usual hours, while others will remain closed for holidays. Check the hours of each store at this link.
