The secretary general of the Federation of executives (Ugict) Sophie Binet became Friday, to the general surprise, secretary general of the CGT, the first woman to hold this position since the creation of the organization in 1895, indicated members of the management at AFP.

This election comes at the end of a night of negotiations during which none of the two candidates hitherto considered, Marie Buisson, the runner-up to outgoing secretary general Philippe Martinez, and Céline Verzeletti, have not managed to reach a consensus on their name.

Sophie Binet, born in 1982, is a former member of the Unef student union and former CPE (Principal Guidance Counsellor). She had been at the head of Ugict since 2018.

Coming from the Confederal Executive Commission, the extended management of the CGT, she was a referent of the mixed women’s collective, and committed to environmental issues and gender equality.

Candidate “by default” according to some, she will have the difficult task of picking up the pieces of a deeply divided CGT, at a time when the central is on the front line in the fight against pension reform.

This twist comes after a week of stormy congresses, in the midst of a battle against pension reform and a few days before an inter-union meeting in Matignon, an invitation offered by Elisabeth Borne.
