Ana Mena gave an interview to El Hormiguero on Tuesday, March 28. The singer, who presented her new album, revealed the meaning behind one of her romantic songs.
The artist told an anecdote that served as inspiration for the song I’ve been caught by you. “This was the summer of Covid, the first year of Covid. We, the artists, were very annoyed because we couldn’t do concerts,” said the interpreter, who for the first time in a long time had a completely free summer to make plans. “I told myself ‘I’m going to sign up for everything,'” she added.
“One day my neighbor across the street calls me, who is a very close friend of mine, and tells me ‘a friend of mine with whom I studied at the university who is Italian has called me. He told me that we should go to his town for a few days, that has a town on the coast,'” he said.
Mena accepted, traveled to Italy and ended up going to a birthday party for some friends on the beach. “Suddenly, I find myself on the beach with a giant group of about 25 people, drinking mojitos and margaritas, and my friend and I are already eyeing each other. There was a boy in a corner, far away, who did not speak. The boy was with the lost look, I don’t know, it transmitted something very nice to me. I looked at him and the boy was on his ball, he didn’t pay attention to me. I say ‘I’m going to ask his friends about him,'” recalled the vocalist, who was told that the boy had a girlfriend.
“I am respectful, where there is a girlfriend, I do not even insinuate myself, that is sacred, I respect it to the fullest. I already gave it up as impossible. I returned to Spain and every month or month and a half, I looked at Instagram, to see if I was still with the girlfriend. After six or seven months, my friend calls me and says ‘Ana, do you know that he is no longer with the girlfriend?'” he said.
At that moment, Mena decided to write him a song. “I was inspired by my fantasy, because the truth is that I am very fantasy. I went to the studio one afternoon, I wrote the song, it came out in an hour and a bit, but I wanted to perfect it. Between the time we finished the production and mixed it, they passed a few months. Worst of all, when I went to finish it and sent it to him, he already had another new girlfriend. I never sent it to him,” he lamented.
Mena also talked about her new album, titled Bellodrama, and revealed that she is better at writing songs in sad moments. “When I feel bad, something happens to me or I’m scratched, then I go to the studio. I have my usual team there, which is something I always like to tell because it is my team all my life. I have always worked with the same people, who showed me their trust from the beginning and are still there. I value that a lot”, he stated.
“For me, being in the studio and telling that, or giving it form in the form of songs, is therapy. However, when I’m happy or enjoying myself, I don’t stop to write,” she acknowledged.
