Kassel (dpa/lhe) – Parents of daycare children in Hesse will have to prepare for major problems with childcare next Wednesday (March 8th). On International Women’s Day, the Verdi services union called for nationwide warning strikes in daycare centers and in social and educational services. Rallies are planned across Hesse in Kassel, Marburg, Hanau, Frankfurt and Darmstadt, as the union announced on Friday.

According to Verdi, the warning strikes will take place on International Women’s Day, since the majority of women work in social work, with a share of 83 percent. The union advised parents to find out about alternative options or about emergency care options for their children in the respective facility.

According to the trade unionists, around 800 employees are expected to attend a rally at Opernplatz in Kassel alone. Institutions from all municipalities, the Lebenshilfe Waldeck-Frankenberg and the Emstaler Verein took part in the warning strike in northern Hesse.

In the forthcoming collective bargaining round, Verdi is demanding 10.5 percent more salary for federal and local employees, but at least 500 euros more per month for a period of twelve months. There had been no rapprochement in the second round of negotiations last week.
