Halle (dpa/sa) – After the regional court’s decision not to want to bring proceedings against Halle’s suspended mayor, he is demanding that his suspension be lifted immediately. Mayor Bernd Wiegand (non-party) said on Friday that he expects the President of the State Administration Office to lift the “provisional suspension that has now become irrelevant immediately”.

“The supporters of the suspension were concerned with party-political interests: to force the non-party mayor of Halle out of office,” said Wiegand. Wiegand had repeatedly raised the allegation in the course of the investigations against him over the past two years. He stressed that he was the victim of a “witch hunt”.

Wiegand had himself and other members of the city administration vaccinated against the corona virus in spring 2021, contrary to the vaccination prioritization that applied at the time. This was followed by his suspension by the city council, disciplinary proceedings at the state administration office and investigations by the public prosecutor’s office into misappropriation and falsification of evidence-relevant data. The district court in Halle sees no criminal offense and announced on Friday that it did not want to open any main proceedings against Wiegand.
