Renaissance, the party of Emmanuel Macron, on Monday invested a candidate, Caroline Traverse, for the partial legislative election in the 9th constituency of French people living abroad, where the former Macronist deputy M’jid El Guerrab, sentenced for acts of violence, is also a candidate. Caroline Traverse, 43, is a lawyer in Casablanca and has lived in the constituency (Morocco then Senegal) for 14 years, according to the party.

Renaissance “wanted to present a candidate against M’jid El Guerrab who remains at all costs despite our attempts to convince him to give up”, explained a source within the party. This partial legislative election, scheduled for April 2 and 16, follows the invalidation of the election of Karim Ben Cheikh, representative of Nupes. The 9th constituency of French people living abroad extends from Morocco to Tunisia and, in the south, to Côte d’Ivoire.

M’jid El-Guerrab made headlines in August 2017. During an altercation, he struck a socialist leader, Boris Faure, with a motorcycle helmet. These facts had earned him a one-year prison sentence and two years of ineligibility, which he appealed. After having sat within the Agir group during the previous legislature, he announced his intention to present himself to this partial legislative.

In the ballot last June, Mr. El Guerrab had given up running for his own succession after the Macronists had invested Élisabeth Moreno, Minister Delegate for Gender Equality, finally beaten in the second round with 45.93% of the vote. voice. After his criminal conviction, M’jid El Guerrab reached a civil transactional agreement with his victim in October 2022, with the aim of “turning the page”.
