Munich (dpa/lby) – On the anniversary of the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Munich’s Mayor Dieter Reiter reaffirmed his solidarity with the country under attack. “We stand for democracy, human rights and we continue to stand firmly on the side of the Ukrainian people and our twin city of Kiev,” said Reiter, according to the speech transcript, at a rally in Munich on Friday.

At the meeting, under the motto “Together against war,” the SPD politician spoke out in favor of further arms deliveries by NATO and the European states. The Ukraine does not attack anyone with these weapons, they serve to defend it, said Reiter. “And after all, everyone who is attacked from behind has this right.” Ukrainians are currently defending not only their homeland, but also the fundamental European values ??of freedom and democracy.

Under no circumstances should Putin be allowed to win this war, Reiter demanded. “I can’t imagine what the Russian despot would do next after a successful murderous campaign.”

It is important to send clear signs of solidarity with the people of Ukraine again and again and thus at least give them the feeling of not being left alone, despite all the hardship, said Reiter. Under no circumstances should their fate get out of the headlines and public awareness.

On February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin gave the marching orders for the so-called military special operation – it was the beginning of the war of aggression against Ukraine. Hundreds of thousands of people gathered around the world in solidarity with Ukraine at rallies marking the anniversary of the start of the war on Friday.
