Cult soccer player Kevin Großkreutz ended his professional career a while ago and turned to amateur soccer. The 34-year-old is one of the top performers at the newly promoted Oberliga TuS Bövinghausen. If the march through succeeds, the former national player will probably change.
This plan seems rather strange: cult footballer Kevin Grosskreutz is so successful with his current club that he may soon be forced to say goodbye. “I don’t know if I’ll still be playing for TuS Bövinghausen next season,” said the native of Dortmund in an interview with “Ruhr Nachrichten”. Grosskreutz obviously didn’t expect to knock on the door straight away after being promoted to the Oberliga Westfalen last year. After 19 matchdays, Bövinghausen is currently second and the march through to the regional league beckons.
And that is definitely in the spirit of club boss Ajan Dzaferoski, who has peppered the squad with numerous top players. “I have my own table calculator and here I calculated that we need nine, maybe ten wins in the remaining 17 games to get promoted,” he said a good two weeks ago before the Dortmund derby with ASC, the “Reviersport”.
A development much to the chagrin of the BVB legend: “I’m actually no longer ready to play in the regional league. I went into amateur football because I no longer wanted to play under professional conditions and because I want to spend more time with my family . In the regional league it would almost be professional conditions again.”
That’s why the undisputed regular Großkreutz – this season he was in the starting XI 18 times, scored two goals and prepared three more goals – is already looking for a new club for the coming season. “I’m currently talking to other clubs. I told everyone in the club. I didn’t want anyone to find out about it from third parties. I always want to play with open cards,” emphasized the 2014 world champion.
According to “Ruhr Nachrichten”, the Westphalian league team Wacker Obercastrop and the state league team Kirchhörder SC are promising candidates. “But there is also contact with two other clubs,” said Grosskreutz, who also made it clear that Bövinghausen would remain his “first point of contact”. In any case, the defender is not yet thinking about retiring: “I don’t have any major complaints. My body still feels good. I can still play for two more years from the state league to the premier league.”
