Members of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) have underlined this Wednesday before the delegation of the European Parliament that is analyzing the equality policies implemented in Spain during a visit to Madrid that the law of only yes it has caused damage ” deep” and “irremediable”, as confirmed to EL MUNDO by those attending said meeting.

In this sense, the governing body of the judges have warned that the 4,000 prisoners who are currently in jail for sexual crimes could benefit from the request for reduced sentences from which more than 500 convicts have already benefited. This process could take five years.

The PSOE and Unidas Podemos have not been able to agree on the reform that this law needs precisely to avoid benefits for the aggressors. In any case, the modification would enter into force the day after its publication in the Official State Gazette and would affect crimes committed from that moment on.

In the CGPJ they have explained to the representatives of the Commission on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality of the European Parliament that the only possible solution to avoid lowering sentences is to raise the minimum sentences again, which is the proposal that the majority partner of the Government has led to the Congress of Deputies.

On the affirmations of the Minister of Equality, Irene Montero, who affirms that some courts interpret the only yes is yes with a “sexist bias”, the judges respond that they limit themselves to applying the law and that if they did not do so they would commit a crime of illegal detention. The delegation of the European Parliament itself has made this consideration ugly to the representative of Podemos.

According to the data provided by the CGPJ to the mission from Brussels, to date there have been 522 reductions in sentences and 54 releases.
