Bad Berka (dpa/th) – A large dog injured a 10-year-old boy in the Weimar region and killed his miniature dachshund. The child was taken to a hospital with injuries to both hands, police said on Sunday. The incident happened in Bad Berka. The boy went for a walk with the miniature dachshund on a leash and passed a property where the big dog, a ridgeback, was running around freely. Since the property was not completely fenced, the big dog attacked the miniature dachshund.
The boy tried to protect his animal and picked up the dog. He was bitten on the hands by the attacker. The police spoke of minor injuries. The dachshund did not survive the attack. The 65-year-old owner of the property, who was responsible for the Ridgeback at the time of the incident, has to answer for negligent bodily harm, according to the police. Ridgebacks are often kept as family dogs, but they have a strong hunting instinct.
