Schwerin (dpa/mv) – The Schwerin Ministry of the Environment has extended an application deadline for the promotion of sustainable fishing. So-called local fisheries action groups (FLAGs) can submit their strategies until the end of April, with which they want to strengthen the regional economy, contribute to the preservation of regional fisheries or improve environmental protection, as the ministry announced on Friday. It is therefore about 5.1 million euros from the current funding period of the European Marine, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund.

“With the funding, we want to support fishermen or people working in the fishing industry to build up other income alternatives in this area in addition to the original fishing and thus make the fishing industry more sustainable overall,” Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) was quoted as saying. Aquaculture should also benefit from the funding.
