The New York police have arrested a man who is said to have run over several pedestrians with a van in Brooklyn. According to ABC News, police have confirmed at least four injuries so far. One of the injured is in critical condition and was taken to a hospital. The driver of the van initially fled, but was then arrested. The background initially remained unclear.
Surveillance video of a store shows the driver suddenly pulling off the road onto the sidewalk and continuing his journey from there. A pedestrian can just save himself in front of the vehicle. At this point, at least one patrol car is already following the van. It is unclear whether he had previously caused the accidents mentioned or whether they occurred after the video was recorded.
New York City Councilman Justin Brannan tweeted that police were approaching the truck driver. He is said to have said he wanted to die. Then he continued his journey on the sidewalk.
