Munich (dpa / lby) – The Munich city council stopped the award procedure for the renovation of the Gasteig on Wednesday. The reason: There was only one applicant, as a spokesman for the city announced. And this “did not meet the requirements for participation”. He therefore had to be excluded from the process. The city decided on the award procedure for an investor model for the general renovation of the Gasteig in March 2022.
How the renovation of the building is to proceed is completely unclear. The city council has “commissioned the administration to examine possible options and to present the city council with a proposal for further action by autumn at the latest,” according to the city’s statement.
The Gasteig is also home to the Munich Philharmonic, whose new chief conductor Lahav Shani was introduced on Wednesday. The orchestra is currently mainly performing in the alternative venue Isarphilharmonie.
The city attributes the fact that only one application was received in the competition, which was advertised across Europe, to the market situation and the fact that prices are difficult to calculate: “Due to the effects of the Russian Federation’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which violates international law, the economic framework conditions for the investor model have changed during the participation competition ( …) fundamentally changed,” the statement said. “In view of the currently ongoing, difficult to calculate rising construction price and interest rate bidders can only calculate their investment on a secure basis when the market situation has relaxed again.”
