Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved the government’s proposal to sign an agreement with Belarus on the creation and operation of joint military training centers, according to an order from the Kremlin chief published on Tuesday.
Putin has tasked the Russian Defense Ministry to enter into negotiations with its Belarusian counterpart with the participation of the Foreign Ministry and sign an agreement to create the centers.
According to the draft agreement, the centers are intended, among other things, to increase the combat skills of Russian and Belarusian military personnel.
Their main tasks will be joint combat training, as well as the exchange of experiences in the use of weapons, military and special equipment. The tasks also include the “unification of the combat training of the armed forces” of the two countries. Belarus has already approved the Russian plans.
Russia and Belarus conduct joint military exercises. There is currently one underway for tactical aviation and this Tuesday another for the General Staff began in which joint planning of operations will be tested.
In October 2022, the President of Belarus, Alexandr Lukashenko, announced the creation on the territory of his country of a joint military grouping with Russia.
According to the Belarusian Ministry of Defense, the Russian component of the joint regional grouping will be made up of at least 9,000 soldiers, 170 tanks, 200 armored cars and up to 100 pieces of artillery and mortars with a caliber greater than 100 millimeters.
The Ukrainian authorities, who accuse Lukashenko of complicity with Moscow, for the moment rule out an attack from Belarusian territory, as occurred at the beginning of the Russian military campaign in Ukraine.
