After a murderer escaped from a court in Regensburg, the police released new details: Rachid Chouakri tricked his lawyer at a favorable moment and thus managed to escape. He was only a few seconds ahead – but that was enough.

An international search is now underway for the murderer who fled from a court in Regensburg. So far, 25 tips have been received from the population, but there is still no hot lead, said the police headquarters in Upper Palatinate. Meanwhile, details of his escape became known.

Rachid Chouakri escaped from a window of the Regensburg District Court on Thursday afternoon. The 40-year-old was brought there for a criminal offense in a correctional facility. He is accused of resisting law enforcement officials.

During a break in the hearing, he withdrew to a lawyer’s room on the ground floor for consultation with his defense attorney. According to the police, it is common for lawyers there to be alone with their clients. Chouakri took advantage of this situation and fled. “The lead of a few seconds made it possible to escape from the pursuing officer,” said the Regensburg police headquarters.

The man had been convicted of murder and robbery resulting in death, among other things. He has been serving a life sentence since 2011. Chouakri is considered violent and unpredictable. The police therefore warned the population not to speak to the man. Information should be reported via the emergency call 110.

The police are still looking for the fugitive with a large contingent. Police helicopters, search dogs and closed police units would be used, it is said. The police have also significantly increased their forces in the city of Regensburg and are “noticeably present,” said the police headquarters.
