Augsburg (dpa / lby) – After a physical altercation on New Year’s Eve in Augsburg, an arrest warrant was issued against an 18-year-old. As the police announced on Monday, the young man is said to have injured an opponent with a punch in the face so badly that the victim had to be revived. The 44-year-old was brought to the Augsburg University Hospital with serious injuries after the resuscitation.

The man clashed with two 18-year-olds at Augsburg’s Königsplatz around 6 a.m. on Saturday morning. The reason for the physical altercation between the adolescent and the 44-year-old is unknown. According to the police, the 18-year-old fled when a witness intervened after the punch.

Half an hour after the crime, the two suspects were arrested at nearby Moritzplatz. An arrest warrant was issued on Sunday for the 18-year-old, who is said to have struck the adult, and the second suspect was released. Both the alleged perpetrator and the victim were under the influence of alcohol.

Königsplatz is the central local transport hub in Augsburg and also a crime hotspot. The square is therefore monitored by the police via video. During the Advent season of 2019, an act of violence on Königsplatz made headlines nationwide. At that time, a 17-year-old fatally injured a father with a punch. The perpetrator was later sentenced to four and a half years of youth imprisonment.
