Krefeld (dpa / lnw) – After the shooting of a 42-year-old on the street in Krefeld, the police arrested two men from the drug scene there. The arrest at a well-known meeting point of the scene was made for another reason, said a police spokeswoman on Wednesday.

Both men are not suspects in the murder case, but are now being routinely checked to see whether they could be connected to the crime. The police action on the Krefeld Theaterplatz had already been planned before the shooting.

The autopsy on the victim has meanwhile revealed that the headshot is, as expected, the cause of death. The police did not provide details for investigative reasons.

“We are investigating all conceivable criminal hypotheses and actually only rule out that the man could have been a random victim,” said senior public prosecutor Axel Stahl on Tuesday.

The Albanian was shot dead in the city center on Monday evening. He had lived in Germany for four years and was without a permanent address. At around 7:50 p.m., witnesses heard several shots and saw two men running away in the dark.

The two fleeing men were of normal build, according to witnesses. One was wearing a dark jacket, light trousers and a light headgear, the other a dark jacket with a prominent logo on the back, dark trousers and a dark hat.

Police also towed a car parked near the scene of the crime. “We suspect that the car has something to do with the crime,” said a police spokesman. It will now be examined in the same way as the secured projectiles. Despite an extensive search operation, the murder weapon was also missing with explosives detection dogs.

The man who was shot was known to police for drug and property crimes. According to investigators, he was not a “big player” in the drug business, but rather a small dealer who also used drugs himself.
