Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) – A 34-year-old driver was sentenced to a fine on Wednesday by the Frankfurt district court for a chase with the police at breakneck speed. The man had to pay a fine of 2,700 euros (90 daily rates), and he was also suspended from driving for nine months.

The accused was to be checked in February of this year because of his conspicuous driving style. However, he eluded the police action at speeds of up to 125 kilometers per hour across downtown Frankfurt. The decision is not yet final.

In court, he claimed that, as a diabetic, he suffered from hypoglycaemia while driving. That’s why he wanted to get fruit juice quickly. He was also quite high-spirited because of his birthday. Nevertheless, the court convicted him of illegal racing and endangering road traffic. The speeding driver owed the relatively low penalty to the fact that he had not previously attracted negative attention on the road. The defense attorney had pleaded for acquittal.
