Aachen (dpa / lnw) – The Autobahn 44 between the Belgian border and the Aachen-Brand junction has been released again. Motorists have been able to drive on the route in the direction of Cologne since early Wednesday morning, said a spokesman for the Autobahn company. Further construction work is no longer to be carried out from the motorway, but from an adjacent field. This is to avoid the route being completely closed again.

The truck that crashed there on Monday had lost large amounts of diesel that had seeped into the ground. Experts had determined in the morning that the contaminated soil and parts of the embankment would have to be removed immediately. The work on the ground had turned out to be difficult because measurements had to be taken again and again. In addition, there is only one lane available at the construction site anyway, so that the complete closure was necessary.

The full closure on Monday was only lifted for a few hours on Tuesday after the truck, which had left the road in wet and slippery conditions, was recovered in the early hours of the morning. Previously, 24 tons of peppers had to be taken out of the Spanish truck with a so-called suction excavator, which is actually intended for soil. Nobody was harmed during the accident.
