Munich (dpa / lby) – Should Munich keep the option of a new subway route open – but take the risk of having to borrow many billions of euros? Or should the “U9 relief clip” project, which is intended to make the state capital’s subway network fit for the future, be discontinued and a three-digit million amount that has already been invested be sunk? The members of the city council are faced with this difficult decision on Wednesday (9:00 a.m.).
It is about a route that is intended to relieve the subway lines in the north-south direction, which are already overcrowded at peak times, and the inner-city stations. The complicated thing about it: Although it is not yet certain whether the route can be built and financed at all, some work must already be carried out in the course of construction work on the second S-Bahn trunk line – above all the new underground station that will later be necessary in case of doubt below Munich Central Station.
The city council factions of the Greens as well as the SPD and CSU have already announced that they want to vote for the U9. This would result in a majority. On the other hand, there is an urgent warning from the city treasury: “We recommend getting out of the reprimand measure (…),” says the statement for the general assembly. Even if an unexpected amount of funding were to flow, the amount still to be raised by the city “cannot be financed in view of the already sharply increasing debt of the state capital Munich”.
