Some new cars are currently hard to come by – under certain circumstances you can drive a used car straight from the yard if the price and quality are right. How does an SUV like the Renault Captur fare? According to the TÜV report, it is a buy recommendation and the ADAC has hardly anything to complain about.

SUVs are still booming – which can be seen in the figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority, which show them a market share of almost 40 percent of new registrations. The smaller SUVs, which include the Renault Captur, are also surfing on this wave.

However, the advantage over some new cars is that if you find the right used model, it is immediately available. Then accessing the Captur is not a bad choice with a view to its performance in the main inspection (HU). The “Auto Bild TÜV Report 2022” counts the French among the buying tips.

Model history

The Captur – technically closely related to competing models such as the Opel Mokka, Ford Ecosport or Peugeot 2008 – came onto the market in 2013. In 2017 Renault carried out the facelift; A semi-automatic parking assistant came on board, as well as LED headlights in the upscale model variants. The Captur II, which is not considered here, has been on the market since 2020.

body

The Renault is one of the compact SUVs. He always pulls up with five doors. From its predecessor, the minivan Modus, it inherited the good amount of space and the variable interior. The back seat can be moved. There are no variants.

Dimensions (according to ADAC)

4.12 x 1.78 x 1.57 meters (L x W x H), trunk volume: 377 to 1235 liters

Strengthen

When it comes to the chassis, the Captur uses a French cliché: it is tuned rather softly, which is good for casual cruising. In terms of HU, the TÜV report writes: “Renault should take the good performance of the Captur as a model for other models.”

There are hardly any complaints in the lighting section. The chassis components springs and dampers, drive shafts and steering perform well, as do the brake lines, discs and hoses. Loss of oil is rare.

weaknesses

As HU outliers, the report names excessive defect rates of the axle suspensions at the second HU at a vehicle age of five years and too often an inadequate effect of the foot brake at the third HU. Then there is also some rust on the chassis.

The small SUV only shows increased failure rates in the emissions test during the second mandatory check.

breakdown behavior

Even the ADAC has little to complain about. In its breakdown statistics, the Captur lands in very good places – with the exception of specimens from the year of first registration 2019, which do well. The starters (2016) are known to the ADAC as the main breakdown point.
