Schwerin (dpa / mv) – According to the police, a smoke detector saved the life of a tenant in an apartment building in Schwerin and saved neighbors from major damage. As a police spokesman said on Wednesday, the 56-year-old man was seriously injured in the smoldering fire in his apartment on Tuesday evening. According to initial investigations, the man fell asleep on a sofa with a smoldering cigarette. Heavy smoke developed, so the smoke detector went off and the neighbors in the Großer Dreesch district called the fire brigade and got help. The seriously injured man was taken to a clinic. The amount of damage is unclear. The police are investigating on suspicion of negligent arson.
