Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – New record find by customs officials at Stuttgart Airport: They caught a man who wanted to smuggle gold jewelry worth around 150,000 euros from Turkey to Germany. This is the largest find at Stuttgart Airport in recent years, as the main customs office announced on Tuesday. Most recently, investigators prevented smuggling worth a good third of the amount in 2020.

The 41-year-old man flew to Stuttgart from Istanbul last week and had 212 undeclared pieces of jewelery such as bracelets in his suitcase. He still wanted to leave the baggage claim via the exit for goods that do not need to be declared, where the customs officers stopped him. According to the information, the import details for the jewelery amount to almost 32,600 euros. A security deposit of 24,500 euros was set against the alleged smuggler and criminal tax proceedings were initiated.
