The alleged pact between Podemos and IU in La Rioja to run together in the regional and municipal elections on May 28 is in a limit situation due to the open struggle between the two formations for the distribution of economic resources. IU has had enough and has stood up to the “dirty game” of the purple ones, whom they accuse of having changed their conditions to demand more money and personnel as agreements were reached. Podemos now demands 70%.
The term to register the coalitions before the Electoral Board ends at midnight this Friday. So, just over 24 hours after its fulfillment, the ghosts of the candidacy of both in the Andalusian elections have been fanned, when the confrontation led to an in extremis negotiation and ended in the grotesque that the Podemos signature came outside of time. This implied that the purples were left without officially entering the electoral coalition, however, their candidates were able to form part of the lists.
In this case, not closing an alliance would have much more serious repercussions. Because going separately the two have really difficult to enter the Parliament of La Rioja. In 2019 they together added 11.4% of the votes and won two seats that were decisive in turning around and promoting a coalition government led by the PSOE. It is true that now the Sigma Dos survey for EL MUNDO draws a scenario of an almost absolute majority of the PP, which in the most unfavorable scenario could be achieved with the help of Vox. Podemos and IU move together with 6.1% of the vote. To the limit.
The candidacy of Unidas Podemos in La Rioja is now looking into the abyss despite the fact that it was, with Navarra, one of the first alliances that were on track throughout the country. It was last summer, when the regional directorates of Podemos and IU reached an agreement. The distribution was 50%, Henar Moreno (IU) would be the head of the list for La Rioja and a member of Podemos would do the same for the Logroño City Council.
That pact has remained blocked until now by the national leadership of Podemos, which disavowed its La Riojan leaders by refusing to allow the IU to lead the regional candidacy. The only one that was like this in the nine communities where today there is an electoral alliance.
Finally, last weekend things moved again and a second pact was reached. Podemos assumed this scenario with Moreno as a candidate but took 60% of the financial resources and the first two positions in the Logroño City Council. When everything seemed to be on track, once again the national leadership of Podemos blocked it. On this occasion to now demand 70%.
Henar Moreno denounced yesterday the “dirty game” of Podemos, in a press conference collected by Efe. “It is curious that in Podemos they have not had any problem fully assuming the electoral program raised by IU, because it was the only one presented in this negotiation, but it is not serious or responsible that an agreement is not reached due to a mere matter of economic interests” , he stressed.
IU sources assure EL MUNDO that they are not going to accept last-minute changes or the “changing and unassumable conditions” that Podemos is proposing. For its part, the purple party avoids pronouncing on the situation in La Rioja.
The problem of money is not only income for the party, it is that later this is reflected in parliamentary work or in the hiring of assistants. In the IU, it is considered that ceding 70% of the resources to Podemos is unacceptable because it would imply losing its own capacity and remaining in the hands of Podemos.
