TRENTON – The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested four undocumented Guatemalan immigrants in Trenton Thursday, a spokesman for the agency said.

ICE did not go into detail about the arrests and did not respond to questions about whether the arrestees had criminal records.

Trenton police spokesman Lt. Stephen Varn said that ICE has been carrying out arrests in the capital city for years and the department has helped immigration officials with numerous criminal investigations into undocumented residents in the city.

Trenton police did not help with Thursday’s arrests, Varn said.

Panic, fear spread after Trump expands deportation targets

However, the arrests come in light of a heightened national debate surrounding immigration issues.

This week, documents released by the Department of Homeland Security describe President Donald Trump’s plans to speed up the deportation process and enforce stricter laws against undocumented immigrants.

Last month, officials around the county responded to Trump’s plans regarding immigration – many with anger.

“(We) want to reaffirm that we are a welcoming community that recognizes and celebrates the diversity that makes our town such a special place,” Princeton Mayor Liz Lempert wrote in a letter that was supported by council members in response to a series of executive orders signed by Trump last week.
