Warrant Officer Nicolas Latourte died on Sunday, August 20, in Iraq, “during an operational exercise” while participating in an Iraqi armed forces training mission, the Elysée announced on Monday. He had been “deployed in external operations since May 21, 2023 within Operation Chammal”, communicated the Ministry of the Armed Forces.
“In the evening, Warrant Officer Latourte was mortally wounded on the sidelines of a combat training exercise in an urban area, informs the Ministry of the Armed Forces. He was taken care of immediately and transferred by helicopter to a military hospital in Erbil, where the medical team pronounced him dead. »
The soldier belonged to the 6th engineer regiment. He “lost his life in the accomplishment of his mission,” President Emmanuel Macron said on X (formerly Twitter). The soldier was deployed in operation as part of a partnership mission of instruction of the Iraqi armed forces, specifies the presidency.
The death of Nicolas Latourte was preceded by that of Sergeant Baptiste Gauchot, killed in a traffic accident, also in Iraq. “The Nation joins in the immense pain of their families and brothers in arms of the 19th and 6th Engineer Regiments,” added the Head of State.
