An American remains hospitalized after his zebra bit his arm last weekend, seriously injuring him, according to authorities in Ohio, in the northern United States.
Police went to the farm on Sunday afternoon after a call from a 72-year-old man who said he “had been bitten on the arm by a zebra,” according to the police report.
As an officer approached the victim, who was bleeding profusely, a male zebra displaying “very hostile behavior” attacked him, the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office report explains. The police document indicates that the victim appeared to have been “dismembered” and that an officer had put a tourniquet on him to prevent him from losing his arm.
The “aggressive” animal remained close to the police officers, who tried to drive it away. Body camera footage from one of the officers present shows a man chasing the zebra with a stick.
After not being able to scare it away, and at the animal’s insistence on trying to attack the agents, one of the officers ended up fatally shooting the zebra. The officers “had no choice but to shoot him” for his safety, one officer said in the report.
The victim was transferred to a hospital in Columbus, the capital of Ohio, where he still remains despite the fact that his condition is “good”, according to a spokeswoman for the center.
The euthanized horse seems to have had “a protective behavior towards five or six female zebras that were in the field” with him, which could explain his aggressiveness, the police report specifies.
Zebras are not listed as “dangerous wild animals” in the state of Ohio, which means anyone can keep them as a pet.
