At least 26 people have died and 40 are missing in Afghanistan following a flash flood caused by torrential rains, the country’s authorities announced on Sunday (July 23rd).

A government spokesman had announced a few hours earlier that emergency aid had been sent to the scene of the disaster, in the Jalrez district of the province of Wardak, in the center of the country.

A total of 31 people have been killed across the country since Friday, as floods also damaged homes and land, disaster management ministry spokesman Shafiullah Rahimi said.

Although Afghanistan is located on the western edge of the Asian monsoon, flash floods occur regularly during the wet season, when torrential rains pound dry riverbeds.
