Last year, Demi Lovato shared that she’s now non-binary, meaning she no longer identifies with the pronouns “she/her.” In the meantime, however, she has at least changed her opinion on how to address her personally. She now explains why in a podcast.
Demi Lovato revealed on her social media channels in May last year that she identifies as non-binary. The singer changed her pronouns to “they/them” in English. These pronouns were also in the bio on the artist’s Instagram page. Meanwhile, Lovato has also added the pronouns “she/her” (“she/her”).
Speaking on the Spout podcast, the singer explained her decision: “I actually went back to the pronouns of ‘she/her’.” The reason is her “fluid personality”, according to Lovato. Recently she has felt more feminine again.
In the conversation, Lovato also reports from the past few months: “I had the feeling, especially last year, that my male and female energy was balanced.” For example, when faced with the choice of whether to use the men’s or women’s restroom, Lovato said she couldn’t make up her mind. “Because I didn’t necessarily feel like a woman. I didn’t feel like a man. I just felt like a human being.”
People with non-binary gender identities do not clearly define themselves as male or female. Demi Lovato announced on Twitter in 2021 that the decision follows a period of healing and self-reflection. In another post, the star said changing the pronouns to “they/them” allows them to feel more authentic as who Lovato is and is yet to discover.
In the German language, the neopronouns “xier/dey” are used instead of “they/them”, but there are still no really established pronouns in the third person for non-binary people. It is best to ask your non-binary counterpart yourself how they would like to be addressed.
