Stuttgart/Heidelberg (dpa/lsw) – On Monday morning, climate activists blocked roads in Stuttgart and Heidelberg for obstructions in commuter traffic. Busy roads were affected in both cities, the police said.
In Heidelberg, eight activists glued themselves to federal highway 37 with superglue. The police diverted traffic and detached the demonstrators from the roadway. Even after that, there were still traffic disruptions due to the backlogs in all directions. According to the information, the backlog on Autobahn 5 from the directions of Frankfurt and Karlsruhe was five kilometers at the top.
The activists call themselves the “Last Generation”. They did not call for new oil drilling in the North Sea. Instead, an “immediate massive expansion of renewable energies must take place”. According to “Last Generation”, the activists in Heidelberg included two students and two engineers.
In Stuttgart, around 7.20 a.m., three activists from the same alliance stood on the federal highway 14. They held up a banner with the inscription “Stop the fossil madness”.
They were carried away by officers, said a police spokesman. The three people are being investigated on suspicion of coercion on the road. Due to the blockade, there were additional small obstacles on the road, which was already busy in the morning.
