Iffezheim (dpa/lsw) – The four-year-old stallion Alter Adler won the Grand Prix of the Baden Economy on Sunday on the racecourse in Iffezheim and inflicted a sensitive defeat on Germany’s best racehorse Torquator Tasso. In front of 11,000 spectators, the winner of last year’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Iffezheim was disappointing and only finished sixth out of seven horses in the race, which was endowed with 70,000 euros. “I can’t explain it at the moment, it was just too bad,” said Rene Piechulek, Torquator Tasso’s jockey.
Andrasch Starke was the celebrated winning jockey in the saddle of last year’s Derby runner-up Alter Adler, who won the race coming from last place. Virginia Storm (Alberto Sanna) surprisingly finished second, third place went to Mansour, ridden by Sibylle Vogt.
“That’s a class horse,” said jockey Starke about Alter Adler, which he rode for the first time. In ten previous starts, Alter Adler had finished second seven times, was considered the eternal second, but now managed an important victory. Waldemar Hickst is the trainer in Cologne for the stallion bred and owned by Ursula and Jürgen Imm from Freiburg. The big goal of the season with Alter Adler is a start in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
