Bühl has been calling itself “plum town” for ages. But in order to be allowed to write the title on the town entrance sign, an official application is required. Now it can be printed, because after a long debate there is a decision.

Bühl (dpa / lsw) – There is the “Crocus City” and the “Staufer City”, the “Baroque City”, the “Waterfall City” and also the “Shepherd’s Run City”. Now, the nearly 20 towns and communities in Baden-Württemberg with additional designations have been joined by another: Bühl can officially call itself “plum town” from the turn of the year. Titles like this strengthened the identity and the sense of togetherness locally, said Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) on Thursday in Stuttgart. “The “plum town” of Bühl is a particularly impressive example of this.”

Ultimately, the population of Bühl (Rastatt district) had the official additional title with a citizens’ petition under the motto “Without Quetsch, ebb’s is missing!” pushed through. Because it was only at the second attempt and after clear encouragement from Bühler that the municipal council voted for a proposal from Mayor Hubert Schnurr (independent). “Bühl is a town of plums – not only in the minds and hearts of the people of Bühler, but also far beyond,” said Schnurr on Thursday.

Bühl has long called itself the home of plums. According to the city, the Bühler early plum was discovered around 1840. In honor of the fruit, the plum festival has been celebrated as a harvest festival since 1927. A plum queen represents the blue fruit in the region.

At the end of 2020, the state parliament relaxed the practice for additional designations for municipalities. Since then it has been much easier for them to use another designation in addition to the community name. Previously, this was mainly reserved for health resorts that could get the addition “spa” and university towns. Now Calw can also call itself “Hermann-Hesse-Stadt”, Knittlingen (Enzkreis) is the “Fauststadt” and Neidenstein (Rhein-Neckar-Kreis) the “Burgdorf”.
