Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – Because he didn’t want to pull the weeds by hand, a 56-year-old man in the Heidenheim district triggered a fire brigade operation. The man went on Thursday in his garden in Dischingen with a Bunsen burner against the weeds, the police said. But he overshot the mark: not only did the weeds catch fire, but the entire hedge suddenly caught fire. The fire brigade responded with several emergency services and two vehicles. A police spokesman said they are now investigating. He also pointed out that causing a fire hazard is a criminal offense. But it happens again and again that hobby gardeners set fire to hedges in the fight against weeds. “When it’s dry, the surrounding wood catches fire in no time.”
