Sandig comes from Esslingen am Neckar and later came to Berlin. From 1996 he expanded the Sophiensäle there into an internationally active production house for theatre, music and dance and from 1999 he was part of the artistic management of the Schaubühne, the Berlin Senate Chancellery announced.
