Albstadt (dpa / lsw) – Charges have been brought against the mother of a five-year-old girl who died in June after a swimming accident. The 25-year-old woman is suspected of violating her parental duty of care and supervision, prosecutors said on Wednesday.

The woman and her three children visited a leisure pool in Albstadt (Zollernalbkreis) on June 23. According to the announcement, she left her five-year-old daughter, who could not swim, unattended and without a swimming aid in a pool.

While playing, the girl got her head under water, lost consciousness and sank to the ground. A few minutes later it was discovered by another visitor and recovered from the pool. Despite immediate resuscitation measures, the five-year-old died in hospital the following day. The mother is now being charged on suspicion of negligent homicide.
