Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – Students at the universities of applied sciences (HAW) – formerly technical colleges – should be allowed to start the doctorate process in September. The Science Committee approved the ordinance granting the right to award doctorates to the HAW on Wednesday, the Ministry of Science and Research in Stuttgart announced. The new right to award doctorates is to be announced in the Law Gazette in September.
“Many young people will be able to benefit from this and the universities involved will be further strengthened in their scientific work,” Minister Theresia Bauer was quoted as saying in a statement. It was the last committee meeting for the Green politician, she will give up her ministerial post at the end of September.
According to the information provided, the 21 state and 3 church universities in the country have joined forces to form a “Promotional Association of Universities of Applied Sciences”. The association may award doctoral degrees. The same quality requirements apply to doctorates in the association as to doctorates at a university.
