Ulm (dpa / lsw) – Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann praised Ukraine for bravery in the fight against Russia and showed solidarity with the refugees. “Ukraine is defending its country with a bravery that wrests respect from the whole West,” said the Green politician on Wednesday in Ulm at a meeting with Ukrainian refugees, among others, on the occasion of Ukraine’s Independence Day. The independence that is proudly celebrated on such a day must now be defended, said Kretschmann. Ukraine declared its independence from the Soviet Union on August 24, 1991.

During the exchange in Ulm, Ukrainians were able to ask the Prime Minister questions, and Kretschmann received a friendship bracelet in the blue and yellow national colors of Ukraine from an aid initiative. At the same time, the prime minister emphasized that the situation was very tense with regard to the accommodation of refugees in the south-west. “The number of refugees is increasing and space is becoming increasingly scarce,” said Kretschmann.

The head of government had previously visited a job and integration program for refugees in Eningen near Achalm (Reutlingen district) in order to get an impression of how well refugees are currently being integrated into the labor market in Baden-Württemberg.
