Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – More and more people in Baden-Württemberg are older than 64 years. The State Statistical Office expects an increase from the current 2.3 million to almost 3 million senior citizens in 2040. More than one in four people in the state will then belong to this age group, the authority announced on Monday in Stuttgart.

The main reason is the increasing life expectancy. For a newborn boy it is now almost 80 years, for a newborn girl it is over 84 years. Since the 1970s, life expectancy has increased by more than 11 years for men and almost 10 years for women.
