Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – Science Minister Petra Olschowski (Greens) looks with concern at dilapidated university buildings. “A central complex for the next few years is the issue of building,” she told the “Mannheimer Morgen” (Wednesday). The university buildings from the 70s and 80s are now all in need of renovation at the same time. “We have an enormous renovation backlog,” she said. “With a dilapidated structure, we are not an attractive research and university location.”

The declining student numbers are also worrying. “We have to get clarity about the background.” Corona and the low birth rate cohorts are only part of the explanation. “Perhaps we also need joint nationwide marketing,” she said. “We have to take countermeasures so that this enormously strong research and science location gets the young scientists and specialists it needs.”
