Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – In the debate about the Stuttgart Opera, the new Science Minister Petra Olschowski sees no alternative to the controversial renovation worth billions. But she pleads for objectivity. “At the moment there is nothing to pay and all statements about higher cost increases than previously planned are based on estimates and not on reliable figures,” said the Green politician of the German Press Agency. It is difficult to foresee how the situation will be in two years. “That’s also why I find it difficult to speculate about the amount of any additional costs at this point in time,” said Olschowski.
The more than 100-year-old opera house in Stuttgart’s palace gardens needs a general overhaul and is bursting at the seams. Among other things, a modern so-called cross stage should make faster and easier changes of scenery possible. In addition, more space is needed, for example for rehearsal rooms, the roof from 1911 is dilapidated, the stage technology is outdated and the gastronomy is no longer up to date. Whether the previous budget of more than one billion euros can be maintained, however, is strongly questioned.
