Mannheim (dpa / lsw) – Cat owners in Mannheim must register and label their free-roaming animals by June 22nd. Then the cat protection ordinance passed by the municipal council in December 2022 will come into force, as the city announced on Wednesday. A veterinarian can implant an electronically readable microchip in the cat or make a small tattoo on the ear. The data must then be entered in the free pet register of the Tasso association or the German Animal Welfare Association, as it was also said.
If a cat is found after the deadline and it is not possible to locate the owner within 48 hours, the city can tag, register and neuter the animal. If the owner is found afterwards, the costs should then be claimed there. The reason for the protection ordinance is the large cat population in Mannheim.
