Philippsburg (dpa/lsw) – More protection from the next flood: The flood dam on the Rhine island of Elisabethenwört near Philippsburg (Karlsruhe district) will be renovated over a period of months from next Tuesday (October 4th). According to the Karlsruhe Regional Council, water had increasingly leaked out and sand was washed out during past flood events on the 1,000-meter-long section of the dam. In order to secure the dam, it is to be widened on the land side by next spring.

According to the authorities on Thursday, the EUR 1.5 million dam renovation has nothing to do with the controversial planned Elisabethenwört retention area. The planning approval procedure is being prepared for this. The retention area is one of 13 retention areas of the integrated Rhine program in Baden-Württemberg. Because the dam on the Rhine island is to be relocated to protect against flooding, there has been a dispute in the region for years. Residents fear the destruction of the animal and plant world and a plague of gnats from standing water.
