Karlsruhe (dpa/lsw) – Rolling instead of sliding, plastic instead of ice: A roller skating rink could replace the ice skating rink in front of the Karlsruhe Palace this year at Christmas to save electricity. The municipal council still has to vote on the project, but a commitment is likely, said Roland Rebmann, spokesman for Karlsruhe Marketing and Event GmbH (KME), on Wednesday. First, the SWR had reported on the plans.

The surface of the roller skating rink is a bit smaller than that of the ice rink, “but we hope that the Christmas decorations and the “Winter Village” will create a nice atmosphere,” said Rebmann. Stands and stalls offering food and drinks are to be set up around the track. If the municipal council votes for the construction of the roller skating rink, it will be in front of the castle from November 24th to January 8th.
